New York State Unemployment Up, But Google Says “Don’t Worry”

It is no secret that New York State is in trouble. A couple of weeks back Forbes reported that the state’s unemployment rate had reached is worst valley in over 25 years, while New York City’s jobless numbered more than at any time since 1993.

According to that report, nearly a million people are out of work in New York State. Compared with the national jobless rate of 9.7 percent , New York is decidedly worse at 9 percent. Last year, before the recession took hold, New York’s unemployment beat the national average at 5.7 percent, versus 6.2 percent. New York City appears to be the hardest hit, but what does this mean for the overall picture of the Nation’s economy?

No Reason For Alarm – Google Shows It Is Normal

Using the wonderful tools of Google, there is not more reason to be alarmed about New York’s unemployment rate than any of the other states. In fact, New York is getting along rather nicely compared to some other key ones. If you look at the trends below supplied by Google, it is easy to see that these metrics follow pretty much the same trend whenever there is a recession. New York being somewhere in the middle by these accounts, with Michigan obviously being hit much harder.

wall streetThese stories of unemployment rates tend to alarm people, and for good reason. However, it is easy to see that New York is no worse off than it ever has been with regard to any “special” or individual danger for people living there. One has to wonder (or hope in some cases) if most of those newly unemployed and on the street are Wall Street pimps like the one pictured top though.

Sorry, just a little tongue in cheek jab at the people who helped put millions out of jobs. We hope this Google trends and graphs help did something good for someone surfing the trends today though.

Stay calm, and anyone considering relocating, obviously Colorado is doing much better. For those really hit hard, the NY people who are just ordinary Joe’s and Josephine’s, there is however not much hope in sight anywhere in America. We only hope your misery will end soon – honestly.
