Thanks for the Memories Miramax, “The End”
According to news from Disney Studios, the New York and L.A. offices of Miramax movie studio will be shutting down today. Miramax,
formed by brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein in 1979, was acquired by Disney in 1993. The studio came to represent the pinnacle of the motion picture art for many in the 1990′s. Also according to the news, the company currently has another 6 films to be distributed.
Miramax was the pot from which such acclaimed films as Pulp Fiction and The English Patient was stirred. Miramax was accepted as one of the industry’s most respected and influential production companies. Not only was Miramax responsible for the breakout of director Quentin Tarantino, but many an independent film revolution which provided invaluable artistic license for some of today’s finest films. Apparently, the demise of Miramax was predicted once Disney made the acquisition.
80 employees will hit the creative bricks in search of new canvas to paint on now. The mood at Miramax today, was of course somber. “Shakespeare in Love,” “Chicago” , Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs”, chicago, the list of successes for Miramax makes one wonder at this decision by Disney?
