Microsoft Security Essentials Beta Launched, but Not in Europe
Microsoft Security Essentials Beta launched today, but it is only available in the United States, Israel (English only), People’s Republic of China (Simplified Chinese only) and Brazil (Brazilian Portuguese only). In these countries, Security Essentials will be available for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 as a 4.7MB download.
On the landing page, no matter what links users from Europe would click on, the message is always the same: “Not available in your country or region.” No mention of a date or a remote possibility that the service would become available in the region on a later point.
Microsoft first announced Security Essentials last year, as a free replacement to Windows Live OneCare – which is still available in Europe, but it is a paid service. Security Essentials is a free, and many software vendors are afraid that the product will contribute even more to Microsoft’s desktop supremacy.
PC World ranked Microsoft Security Essentials fourth in its Free Antivirus Software Chart. The winners are Avira AntiVir Personal, Avast Antivirus Home Edition and AVG 8.5.
Recent reviews of Microsoft Security Essentials introduce a superior product, that top-ranked the best of the best in the industry. Analysts predict that Security Essentials will turn out to be a real contender in the free antivirus arena – more of a reason for the users in Europe to be anxious for its release in the region.
