Love Aaj Kal is the Bollywood Release of the Year [video]

I want to share with the readers a fascinating movie from where else? Bollywood of course. The newest release of Love Aaj Kal would not be so out of the ordinary if it were not for that fact that it is better than most of what Hollywood has to offer these days. The one drawback for potential viewers in the US, UK and Europe (among other places) is of course language. Even if the reader is forced to read subtitles however, just reading the reviews and in the end, looking at the superb cinematic effect (let alone the shining faces present) should be more than good entertainment. Refreshing is an over used term for movie reviews, but Love Aaj Kal appears to be all that too.

On the negative side of Eros Entertainment, reaching someone at any of their offices around the world is perhaps even more difficult than talking to Elvis. I called each of their International offices, only to get a nice (if incapable of giving answers) receptionist in the UK. After trying to type in the email address she gave me 6 or 7 times, only to find error messages in my inbox, I decided to just tell our readers what a great movie they made. So, without further diversions (well, not yet any way), a review of something bright, refined and intimately enjoyable.

The hero and heroin of Love Aah Kal are everyday people (except remember they are actors). The film would probably be classified as a “chick flick” if it were produced in the US or the UK, and that it is. But, for all you guys out there, you know you really love these types any way, even if you are scared to admit it. Relationships are what we are all about any way right? Well this movie paints everyday life with broad but subtle strokes like the best English variants, only with a color, style and inherent happiness some India films exude.

Love Aaj kalI did not intend to write a full movie review of Love Aah Kal, it is not my job after all. But, sending out news about great stuff certainly is on my “to do” list. The characters in this happy little film are imminently refreshing and easy to draw close to. Jai, the central boy component to the story, is as one reviewer notes, “Filled with a sort of nervous energy” any of us guys will associate with. Meera, played by Deepika, is the perfect match for Jai, at least to me. She exudes the same energy, wittiness, and in the end grabs the audience as the perfect mate for the him. The story is really two stories though, basically about the present and the past, with another couple, Veer Singh (Rishi Kapoor) and Harleen (Ava Mukherjee), his love interest. A tale of generational interaction as much as it is a love story, Love Aah Kal appeals to this writer more from its bridging of the language and cultural barrier as it does any age gap premise.

love aaj kal directorDirector Imtiaz has done a masterful job of putting this piece together, capturing not only the ironic twists and turns of life, but blending it together with memorable imagery and of course the much awaited sound track. All I can tell the reader is, is that regardless of your language of choice of genre for film, the sound for this romantic journey is worth listening to in any tongue. Gripping and happy, that is it – Love Aaj Kal.

As a side note, we have been covering a lot of stuff from India of late, and now finally trying to engage directly some of the people in Bollywood, we ran into an unsuspected obstacle – I like would like to call it “the ostrich syndrome”, but I am not sure if Eros Entertainment has its head buried in the sand with regard to publicizing its wares, or if there is a link missing somewhere? The video trailer we wanted to show (for them and you the reader) has been disabled for embed. On top of that it appears Eros has pretty much spammed the hell out of YouTube with a hundred variants, all of which cannot be shared easily. What is up with that is a guessing game, a trailer?

For some fun I took a look at the offices of Eros Entertainment from Google to see how come no one was answering, or why the ones who did answer appeared to be clueless about the film or even who to talk to. Further investigation revealed nebulous results for Fiji, Australia, Singapore, Dubai, and even India itself.

The screens below reveal what looks like a warehouse (with an empty parking lot) in the UK, and below that the US headquarters in NJ (across the street from a college campus). Judging from the 1985 vintage cars in the parking lot of the US office, unless Google has gone retro on us, the executives there are grossly under paid.
