Greg Oden Leaked Photos Prove that No One Is Immune to Cheesy Marketing Strategies
I have a thing against the “leak photos” strategy used by many female celebrities to get some media attention every once in a while. But men are no better, as the latest search trend proves: “Greg Oden Leaked Photos” is a big thing in the media now, with sound-bits featured on LALATE, Showbiz Gossip and the like. Don’t expect to see him naked on any of these sites – the images are still available on Worldstarhiphop.com (link leads to adult content) as I write this, but I am sure Oden’s lawyers will find a way to end the madness soon.
The Portland Trailblazers center confirmed the authenticity of the images, “First, I’d like to apologize to everybody … Portland, the fans, the organization. It was very embarrassing. It was something that happened over a year and a half ago. It was a lady friend who I was having a relationship with, and it was just for her. It was definitely meant to keep private,” Oden explained. “I’m very sorry, and I’m definitely embarrassed for my family and everybody.”
Coming forth, taking the blame and learning the lesson are all elements of “damage control.” Greg Oden is smarter than Tiger Woods, who still plays a hiding, stuck on stupid game. But whoever leaked Greg’s pictures online, had a clear purpose in mind: to damage his reputation. If Greg Oden himself did it, even by accident… well, that equals stupidity as well. What stars and athletes “victimized” by leaked photos don’t get, is that it’s always their fault. Lou Brancaccio of The Columbian explains this far better than I ever could:
When you make a living in the public — for better or for worse — your private life is part of your public life. When you share those glowing family photos with the world, you’re positioning yourself in a good light for those sponsors that are paying you millions of dollars. In other words, you have given up the right to keep your private life completely private, especially when you’re a married guy, who had more phone numbers than the Yellow Pages.
So imagine what happens when nudity is involved. The public goes crazy, the media feeds the frenzy. It’s a rule of marketing, selling copy, getting traffic – and no one is immune to it.
