In breaking news from New Guinea, the USGS recorded a magnitude 6.2 earthquake 58 miles North of Rabaul early today.

Preliminary reports revealed there are no deaths or injuries, and officials have not issued a tsunami warning. The quake is the second major one in New Guinea this year, the previous one registering 6.5 back in February.

This quake, at a depth of 263 miles, occurred 4 hours later than another aftershock in Chile today which measured 5.0. A rash of quakes and aftershocks have obviously cause great concern worldwide. In the last 24 hours there have been total 8 magnitude 5.0 or above quakes around the world.

Most of these were in the Chile region, but at least one, a magnitude 5.3 one, was remotely located in the Lake Baykal region of Russia. Any number of smaller tremors have occurred in Russia leading up to this latest strong one. As for Chile, the numbers and magnitudes of those in the aftermath of the recent devastating one, are too numerous to even list.

Again, this event in New Quinea does not appear to have caused any major damage or injuries. We will continue to monitor its effects via local news outlets there and the USGS monitoring site.
