comScore has just released its findings regarding Twitter’s worldwide growth in a June usage report showing over 93 million Internet users visited Twitter.com, up 109 percent from last year. The microblogging site has seen strong increases across all major regions around the world. Based on an analysis by country, Indonesia topped in Twitter.com penetration, with a percentage of 20.8 of the country’s Internet users accessing Twitter, closely followed by Brazil and Venezuela.
It’s extremely important to note that the analysis only took into account Twitter.com visits and the three digit growth since June 2009 does not include usage of Twitter applicaitons such as TweetDeck or Hootsuite.
Across the five major global regions, Latin America experienced the strongest growth in audience, with 15.4 million users, up 305 percent. Asia Pacific is the second-fastest growing region, hitting the 25.1 million visitors mark an a 243 percent increase. The Middle-East Africa reported a 142 percent increase to 5 million visitors, while Europe penetration went up by 106 percent to 22.5 million visitors. North America showed a far less impressive increase, of 22 percent to nearly 25 million visitors in June, reflecting Twitter’s higher maturity level than in other regions. Both US and Europe adoption of Twitter has been heavily powered by smart phone Twitter apps.
“Twitter.com has experienced an explosion in global traffic over the past year, establishing itself as one of the most-visited social networking sites across each of the five worldwide regions,” said Graham Mudd, comScore vice president, search & media. “Today nearly 3 out of 4 global Internet users access social networking sites each month, making it one of the most ubiquitous activities across the web. As more users around the world have become acquainted with connecting and expressing themselves through social media, it has created an environment where new media like Twitter can emerge globally in a relatively short period of time.”
Indonesia, Brazil and Venezuela lead in the Twitter growth by country top. Venezuela’s boom is due to President Hugo Chavez’s decision to join twitter in April 2010. Other countries reporting high increases in Twitter penetration were the Netherlands, Japan, the Philippines, Mexico and Singapore.
