Carole White, the second witness to take the stand today in Hague at the war crimes trial against former dictator Charles Taylor, backed Mia Farrow’s earlier testimony about the “blood diamonds” received as a gift from Taylor by Naomi Campbell, pointing out the inaccuracies in the model’s testimony from last week.
White told the court Campbell had been flirting with the former Liberian President and that she knew of the gift in diamonds he has planning to present her with. The testimony also showed the idea of giving the uncut diamonds to charity was not Campbell’s, the suggestion having been made by White.
“Naomi was very excited and said, ‘Oh, he’s going to give me some diamonds,’ ” claimed White. She said Taylor and Campbell were being “charming” to each other at the dinner. “Naomi I think was flirting with him and he was flirting back.”
White also claimed that after the dinner, Campbell was in contact with representatives of Taylor, and that she knew they had gone from Pretoria to Johannesburg to collect some diamonds. White said that after the men came to Campbell’s room, she and Campbell welcomed the men and gave them cokes. The men then gave Campbell “a scruffy piece of paper,” according to White, that contained the diamonds.
Campbell was “quite disappointed because they weren’t shining,” said White.
Charles Taylor is accused of 11 different war crime counts, including allegedly using uncut “blood diamonds” to buy guns for rebels in Sierra Leone to be used in a bloody civil war. Trial prosecutors state Taylor’s alleged gift of uncut gems to Naomi Campbell after the model has attended a 1997 dinner at Nelson Mandela’s house is proof Taylor was buying guns in South Africa.
The penalty for lying to the Special Court for Sierra Leone is a fine and up to two years in jail.
