Black Swan featuring Natalie Portman, a Different Type of Movie about Dancing [video]

We have all gotten used to a certain type of movies when it comes to dancing, regardless of the dance genre they depict. It’s usually a light story, with some romance and hard dance practices, with lots of music and…you guessed it, dancing and a happy ending. The fresh online release of the Black Swan trailer starring Natalie Portman promises a movie about ballet, that’s also a dark, fascinating thriller about pressure, competition and good side vs dark side within a person’s mind.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, known for powerful dramas such as “Requiem for a Dream” and “The Wrestler”, Black Swan traces the story of Nina, an upcoming ballet dancer in the New York City ballet scene. She is given the leading part in the production of “Swan Lake”, but her triumph is short-lived, as a new dancer, Lily (Mila Kunis), threatens her recently acquired position. The two engage in a twisted sort of friendship, and the thrilling question of who is getting in Nina’s way, real competition or a fiction of her imagination, leads the movie’s troubling story.

The ending scene of the trailer will send chills down your spine: Nina pulling a tiny black feather from a wound on her back:

Other than being a quite intriguing trailer for Black Swan, its online release is actually a very smart PR move. Online release means quick access and the moment of choice will just help build expectations and excitement until the movie’s release in early December 2010. The lucky ones attending the Venice International Film Festival on September 1st will get to see the Black Swan premier three months ahead of its worldwide launch.

Please put a warning on the trailer. There is very disturbing material in it. Not fair to watch thinking it is something about ballet
