News from California reveals just how crazy people get over deals after Thanksgiving. According to CBS News, some twenty people, including small children were injured when a woman unleashed a pepper spray “competitive shopping attack.” The report comes from San Fernando Valley’s Walmart, where a scuffle broke out, reportedly over an Xbox and/or some Wii games.
The Los Angeles Times was informed by Alejandra Seminario, that shortly before 10 PM on Thursday some shoppers on an adjacent aisle began ripping away plastic wrap off game consoles. Shouting ensued, after which someone sprayed everyone with pepper spray. The scene was described as chaotic, some customers later complaining with swollen faces and obvious signs of distress.
In other Black Friday craziness, from Arkansas to Alaska, stores were overwhelmed by shoppers in lines surrounding – deal hunters waiting impatiently to close ranks on those coveted games and toys, Christmas goodies priced too good – too good for people to be civil, evidently. Even Canada is beginning to show the wear and tear over the chaos caused when Walmart (otherwise known as housewife hell) is overloaded by want and desire for savings.
As if some never knew, the safest and best deals are online anyway, just why people subject themselves to pepper spray or worse is anyone’s guess. It’s really a wonder more people are not run over and trampled like the woman in this story. The Sun reports Target getting “smart” corralling shoppers to prevent trampling etc. Whatever you do out there today, just be considerate and safe.

Incidents such as these are sad and shameful for the world-view of our country. Just 24 hours after we are supposed to give thanks and show compassion for those in need, all of this comes to surface from the Capitalist mania the public is worked into by Big Business. I wrote an article about the true meaning behind our holiday and a warning about our national disgrace which is Black Friday at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2010/11/wishing-you-and-yours-bountiful-harvest.html
